Changing Your Email Address

Updated

Your email address is what you sign in with, so changing it takes two steps. First you confirm in the portal with your current password. Then you click a link sent to the new address. The change doesn't take effect until you've clicked that link.

Before you start

  • You'll need your current password.
  • You'll need to be able to open email at the new address right now - the confirmation link expires in 15 minutes.
  • The new address must not already be in use by another account.

1. Open the Change email dialog

  1. In the sidebar, find your profile button at the bottom - it shows your avatar, name, and email.

  1. Click your profile button at the bottom of the sidebar. The small menu opens upward.

  1. Click Settings. The Account Settings page opens on the Account tab.

  1. In the personal details card at the top, find the Email field. It's read-only (you can't type into it directly) and has a small badge on the right that says either Verified or Unverified.

  1. Click the small pencil icon just to the left of that badge. The Change email dialog opens.

2. Type the new email

  1. New email: type the address you'd like to switch to.
  2. Confirm new email: type the same address again. The two have to match exactly.

If you mistype, a message reading "Email addresses do not match" shows up under the second field. If you accidentally type your current email back in, you'll see "New email is the same as your current email" instead. Fix the typo and the message goes away.

  1. Password: The dialog now asks for your current password. Type it in.

At the bottom of the dialog, drag the Slide to update email control all the way to the right.

You'll see a small message: "Email updated. Check your inbox to verify."

Back on the page, the personal details card still shows your old email address, but the badge has changed to Unverified to let you know a change is pending.

  1. Open the inbox of the new address (not the old one). The portal sends the link to the new address on purpose - that way, if someone steals your session, they can't quietly move your account onto an inbox they control.
  2. Find the confirmation email and click the link inside. The link points to /account/email/confirm?token=… on the portal.
  3. The portal swaps the address over, marks it Verified, and signs out every other device that was signed in to your account.

If the link doesn't work because it's older than 15 minutes, just start over from step 1. Re-requesting automatically replaces any pending request - there's nothing to cancel manually.

What changes from here

Once you've clicked the confirmation link:

  • The new email is now your login. Use it the next time you sign in.
  • Notifications go to the new address from now on.
  • A "Your email was changed" notification goes to your old address as a tripwire. If you ever get that email and you didn't change your address, treat it as a sign someone got into your account - change your password and sign out everywhere immediately.
  • Every other device you were signed in on gets signed out.
